Ucluelet

Die Woche an Vancouver Islands Westküste, in Ucluelet („Ukee“ für Insider wie Co!) verging wie im Flug. Auch wenn wir im fast täglich hochnebeligen „Fogust“ gelandet sind, ein sehr besonderer Ort. Ab hier gibt es gen Westen nur noch Ozean.

Unser Tagesablauf folgte weiterhin dem Motto:  morgens Schule, nachmittags Aktionen. Dazu gehörte beispielsweise eine Wanderung auf dem West Coast Trail, das lokale Aquarium (Knaller! Ein „catch-and-release“ Museum mit den lokalen Wasserbewohnern zum Anfassen & einer tollen Ausstellung zum Thema Plastik im Meer) sowie ein Ausflug nach Tofino (deutlich touristischer als Ucluelet, dafür aber mit eigener Brauerei…).

Die meiste Zeit haben wir am Long Beach verbracht (never change a winning beach!). Insgesamt waren wir hier 3 Nachmittage. Neben Joggen (Katinka und Frank) sowie Burgenbauen und einfach nur Quatsch machen (die Lüdden), haben wir hier alle das erste Mal auf dem Surfbrett gestanden. Katinka hat mit Espen sogar einen Kurs gemacht und uns anderen dann theoretisch erklärt und teilweise gezeigt – oder es zumindest versucht – wie es geht. Laut Familienbeschluss ergibt sich folgende Reihenfolge der Surfkünste (Stand Vancouver Island):

  1. Espen (Naturtalent)
  2. Lykka
  3. Katinka
  4. Ture und Frank

Einzige Ausnahme der relativ geregelten Tagesabläufe war Frank´s Geburtstag. Hier gab es
a) schulfrei (auch schön für die Eltern),
b) Geburtstagskuchen (bzw. Zimtschnecken mit Kerzen) und 
c) ging es auf´s Wasser: Whalewatching. 

Tatsächlich haben wir eine Buckelwalmutter mit ihrem Kalb aus relativer Nähe gesehen. Die Kinder fanden die Seelöwen aber mindestens genauso spannend.

Nach 5,5 Wochen endet unsere erste Etappe „Canada“ der Familienweltzeit und es geht nach Hawaii. Wir haben das erste Mal das Gefühl, wirklich auf einer längeren Reise und nicht nur im Urlaub zu sein, da es im Flughafen nicht wieder gen Heimat, sondern immer weiter weg geht. Ein gutes Gefühl…
