Outback light
Keine Australienreise ist ohne Outback komplett. Damit die Kinder und Frank einen Eindruck vom „red heart“ des Kontintents bekommen, steht für die nächsten beiden Tage Outback auf dem Programm. Das heißt: 5 Stunden Fahrt stur nach Norden, wieder 5 Stunden zurück nach Süden und in der Zwischenzeit eine Reise in eine andere Welt. Rote Erde, trockenes ausgedörrtes Land wohin man sieht. Und trotzdem leben hier Menschen (mit Witz) und Tiere (ohne Probleme mit Trockenheit) – wir sehen viele Emus und natürlich darf das Känguru des Tages nicht fehlen.

Unser Campingplatz liegt im Wilpena Pound National Park in der Flinders Range, ein Tipp von Gesa (vielen Dank :-), welcher von Aborigines geführt wird. Mit einem, Vinny, machen wir eine Wandertour und lernen eine Menge über die Kultur der Ureinwohner Australiens. Auch wissen wir jetzt woher das Känguru seinen Namen hat, warum Eukalyptusbäume auch „Witwenmacher“ genannt werden und dass eine Pflanze Warzen heilen kann und gleichzeitig Aborigine-Süßigkeiten bietet, die lecker sind, aber ziemliche Blähungen verursachen. Good to know…!

Der Sternenhimmel, den wir abends zu Dritt von einem kleinen Hügel aus bewundern (nur Lykka hat sich mit rausgetraut), ist bislang unvergleichlich.

Am Abreisetag werden Katinka und Frank für ihr frühes Aufstehen belohnt: eine knackige Morgenwanderung auf den Mt. Ohlssen Bagge bietet tolles Licht, schöne Aussichten auf den Wilpena Pound – und sehr ausgeschlafene Kinder.

Kangaroo Island
Um die Eindrücke der letzten Tage und Wochen zu verarbeiten, haben wir zum Abschluss unserer Australienreise 5 Nächte auf Kangaroo Island (KI) geplant: die drittgrößte Insel Australiens soll „Oz in a Nutshell“ sein. Unsere Unterkunft im Beach Shack ist einfach, aber zweckmäßig – und nur einige Schritte vom Island Beach entfernt. Wieder ein toller Strand mit flachem „Watt“, Pelikanen und einer idealen Laufstrecke.

Neben der letzten Woche Schule vor den Herbstferien in Fiji ist Zeit zum Abhängen und ein paar Ausflüge.

Die fast 2 Stunden Fahrt zum Nationalpark lohnen sich: wir können uns von der speziellen Tierwelt Australiens „verabschieden“ (Kängurus, Koalas, Echindnas, Robben etc.) und der Adrmirals Arch sowie insbesondere die Remarkable Rocks hinterlassen bei uns einen bleibenden Eindruck. Alleine wegen dieses natürlichen Skulpturenparks am Ende der Welt hat sich KI gelohnt! Auf der Rückfahrt noch ein kurzer Stopp am Vivonne Beach.

Unser „Waschtag“ in Kingscote, dem größten Ort auf KI, der allerdings wenig spektakulär ist, endet mit einer Monster Seafood Plate und einem schnellen Beer-Tasting in der lokalen Brauerei, inmitten der gefühlt gesamten Inselbevölkerung, die sich einen Forschervortrag über das Mini-Possum der Insel anhören – sehr speziell 😉

Unser Transfertag nach Fiji läuft bis auf eine sehr bewegte Fährfahrt, auf der die Hälfte der Passagiere die Möwen füttern und einem rekordverdächtigen Familiensprint durch 2 Terminals beim Umsteigen in Melbourne (kein Duty free 😉 !!) gut – und wir sind gespannt auf den ersten Geschmack von Südsee in Fiji…
